Questions people ask
Which pro-rata method is legally required in Kenya?
None. The Employment Act and the wage orders don't set a method. Use what the contract or HR policy says and apply it the same way every time. Calendar days is the most common.
Are PAYE bands and personal relief reduced for a part month?
No. PAYE is worked out on what is actually paid in the month, using the normal monthly bands and the full KES 2,400 personal relief. Any over- or under-deduction evens out in the employee's annual return.
Should public holidays be deducted for a new joiner?
No. Holidays after the start date are paid holidays under paragraph 8 of the General Wages Order, so they count as paid days. Holidays before the start date are simply outside the employment period.
Do NSSF limits get pro-rated?
No. NSSF is 6% of the month's actual pensionable pay, using the full KES 9,000 lower limit and KES 108,000 upper limit for 2026.
