How it's worked out
- Find the hourly rate: basic monthly salary (plus any allowances your contract includes) divided by 225. A contract week gives salary ÷ (weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12), but never less than salary ÷ 225. Hourly-paid workers use their hourly rate.
- Count overtime on normal days: hours above 52 in a week (60 for night workers). Rest-day and public holiday hours are counted separately.
- Apply the multipliers: 1.5× for normal-day overtime, 2× for rest days and public holidays. A public holiday on your rest day is paid once at 2×.
- Add the lines for total overtime pay. Each line is rounded to the cent first.
- Work out the tax: run payroll with and without the overtime. The difference in PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and housing levy is the tax on the overtime.

Questions people ask
How is the hourly rate for overtime calculated in Kenya?
If you aren't paid by the hour, your hourly rate is at least your basic monthly salary divided by 225, under paragraph 6(2) of the Regulation of Wages (General) Order. If your contract has a shorter week, say 40 hours, dividing by your actual monthly hours gives a higher rate, and that higher rate can be used.
What are the overtime rates?
1.5 times the normal hourly rate for hours beyond your normal week (52 hours, or 60 for night workers), and 2 times the hourly rate for hours worked on your rest day or a public holiday (paragraph 6(1)).
Is there a limit on overtime?
Yes. Normal hours plus overtime may not be more than 116 hours in any two weeks in a row, or 144 hours for night workers (paragraph 6(3)).
Is overtime taxed?
Yes. Overtime is employment income. It is added to gross pay in the month it is paid and attracts PAYE, NSSF (up to the upper earnings limit), SHIF and the housing levy, so you take home less than the overtime figure.
