How it's worked out
- Hold everything else fixed: allowances, benefits, pension, reliefs and other deductions stay as you entered them.
- Try a basic salary and run the full payroll on it: NSSF (6% up to KES 108,000), SHIF (2.75%, at least KES 300), housing levy (1.5%), then PAYE on the bands less KES 2,400 personal relief.
- Compare the net pay with your target. If it is short, try a higher basic; if it is over, try a lower one.
- Halve the gap each time until the basic salary is the smallest amount, to the cent, whose net pay reaches the target.
- Gross pay is that basic salary plus the fixed allowances.
Why the gross-up rate changes
Each extra KES 100 of take-home pay needs a different amount of extra gross, depending on the PAYE band and whether pay is above the NSSF limit of KES 108,000.
| Where the pay falls | PAYE rate | Extra gross per KES 100 net |
|---|---|---|
| Taxable pay up to 24,000 (tax covered by relief) | 10% | 111 |
| Taxable pay 24,000 to 32,333 | 25% | 149 |
| Taxable pay above 32,333, gross up to 108,000 | 30% | 159 |
| Gross above 108,000, taxable pay up to 500,000 | 30% | 149 |
| Taxable pay 500,000 to 800,000 | 32.5% | 155 |
| Taxable pay above 800,000 | 35% | 161 |
Questions people ask
How do I gross up a net salary in Kenya?
Start from the take-home pay you want and search for the gross whose net, after PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and housing levy, matches it. This calculator does that search on 2026 rates and finds the gross to the cent.
Why isn't gross just net divided by (1 − tax rate)?
Because the deduction rate changes with income. PAYE is charged in bands from 10% to 35%, NSSF stops at KES 108,000, SHIF has a KES 300 minimum and personal relief is a fixed KES 2,400. Each extra shilling of gross is taxed at a different rate depending on where it falls.
Are allowances grossed up too?
No. Allowances you enter stay fixed and only basic pay is adjusted. This matches how employers usually agree a net package: house and transport allowances are set, and basic salary is topped up to reach the take-home figure.
Does the gross include employer costs?
No. Gross is what appears on the payslip. The employer also pays NSSF (matching the employee), 1.5% housing levy and the KES 50 NITA levy on top. Use the employer cost calculator to see the full cost.
