How it's worked out
Gross pay is basic salary plus every cash earning: allowances, overtime, bonus and commission. Non-cash benefits such as a company car are added for tax only.
NSSF is 6% of pay: Tier I on the first KES 9,000 and Tier II on pay from 9,000 to 108,000 (8,000 and 72,000 for January 2026).
SHIF is 2.75% of gross pay, at least KES 300. The housing levy is 1.5%.
Taxable pay is gross pay plus non-cash benefits, minus NSSF, SHIF, housing levy and any allowable pension, post-retirement medical fund and mortgage interest.
PAYE applies the monthly bands to taxable pay, then subtracts personal relief (KES 2,400) and insurance relief (15% of premiums, up to 5,000).
Net pay is gross pay minus NSSF, SHIF, housing levy, PAYE, pension contributions and your other deductions such as HELB or SACCO.

Questions people ask
Is a payslip mandatory in Kenya?+
Yes. Section 20 of the Employment Act requires a written, itemised pay statement at or before each payment. It must show gross pay, each deduction and what it is for, and how net pay was paid if it was split. Casual, piece-rate and task-rate workers, and anyone engaged for six months or less, are exempt.
Which deductions are calculated automatically?+
NSSF (6% on pay up to KES 108,000 from February 2026, split into Tier I and Tier II), SHIF at 2.75% with a KES 300 minimum, the housing levy at 1.5%, and PAYE after taking off NSSF, SHIF and the housing levy and applying the KES 2,400 personal relief.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?+
No. Everything, including your logo, stays in your browser. Company details and the current draft are saved on this device so you can come back to them, and you can clear them at any time.
How do I get a PDF?+
Click "Print or save as PDF" and choose Save as PDF as the printer. Use A4 paper with the default margins. The suggested file name includes the employee number and pay month.
Can total deductions be more than two-thirds of pay?+
No. Section 19(3) of the Employment Act says total deductions must not exceed two-thirds of an employee's wages. The generator warns you when they do, so you can reduce loan or advance recoveries.
